If you're looking for a book you can download to your Kindle, pop in your pocket or purse, and pull out in waiting rooms to kill 5 or ten minutes here and there, Transcription is not that book. Ike Hamill is now officially in my Stephen King category of authors, writers whose books must be rationed carefully, saved for weekends or vacations when reading until 2 (3?) am is more easily tolerated. It's a real page turner.Like Hamill's other books, Transcription offers a unique, disturbing premise, a cast of realistic characters, and excellent dialogue. What makes Transcription his best book yet is the lack of any superfluous description or meandering: the pace is swift, the direction always sure. Hamill is becoming a more confident writer and it shows; I'm certain that his best work is yet to come.
Some have expressed disappointment with the book's ending (which happens routinely with Stephen King's novels, too). What I love about King's work is that you may question the destination, but you always enjoy the ride. I thoroughly enjoyed both with Transcription and can't wait for Hamill's next release.

I found Transcription to be one of my favorite Ike Hamill novels. I do not typically care for a novel that bounces around in time, however; I couldn't wait to get through one chapter and on to the next! When an author cannot write fast enough to please their fans, they quickly become top selling authors. Ike Hamill is already there, "in my book"!
I really enjoyed this book. As others before me have stated, it's very reminiscent of Stephen King. It's not often these days I find a story I can barely put down to eat and sleep and it was a delight to find this one. I'll be trying some more from this author.
I couldn't put this book down, loved the stories and it was "spooky". It was moving along at the end very fast and then seemed to end without much drama. I wish the group would have had more interaction at the end. But well worth the read for sure. I'am going to look for another one of his books to try.
Ike's writing--of which I've read a fair bit--is getting more assured with each outing. From the very beginning of Transcription, I felt his firm grasp on the narrative, language and characters, and his intent to wield them with confidence to thrill and entertain me. It's a powerful book, and even a dark book at moments, but it never loses its humanity. Ike gets compared to Stephen King with some regularity, and I see why--I've done it myself. But while I resist reducing an author's unique writing style to a simple comparison, if I had to for Transcription, I'd say it's less like King and more like Chuck Palahniuk with overtones of The Walking Dead.
I really enjoyed this book. It started off quickly and sucked me in right away. I found out about it on BookBub and the description sounded interesting. There were only a few reviews for the book but they were all 4 or 5 stars (mostly 5), so I gave it a try, and I'm glad I did. I liked that it was scary and disturbing at times, but the characters were likeable. There were a few mysteries that weren't fully explained in the end, but that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the book. It was definitely a page turner and the author's style of writing was natural and uncomplicated. Definitely give this one a try.
This is now my favorite Ike Hamill novel. It doesn`t take long to hook you in. It begins with a journal entry of a man who is spending the night in a prison about to be torn down. He has a theory that The Big Four (four notorious murderers) all went insane in the same cell, on the same night. He wants to know what drove them insane and he will find out. The story is told through his diary entries, but mostly the story is about his son as an adult and the curse he picked up as a result of his father`s experiment.
This was a really interesting, original story. There are a few short stories contained within this story. The first story than James writes in the novel was disturbing and creepy and I could not stop reading. If you enjoy Stephen King novels, then you will love this one.
Ike Hamill is an excellent author. The creativity of the story reminds me very much of Stephen King novel, particulary his earlier work when nothing was too shocking to tackle. This book sucked me in from page one. It's creepy. It's unique. It's well-written.
But...
The ending.
I didn't care for the ending.
It seemed rushed, incomplete, and honestly, a little goofy. About 3/4 of the way through the book, I was thinking, "Oh wow...there are so many awesome directions one could take with this story." I sort of feel like Ike chose the worst option. It completely lost me.
I'm going to continue reading this author's other works, as I feel his potential is enormous. I'd even go so far as to recommend this book to my friends, simply for the first 3/4 of the story. The concept is fantastic and the characters have depth.
Overall, 3.5 stars.
